Reflecting on war (Junior moments by Gabe Licht)
|
It's been almost a week since I visited the National World War I Museum in Kansas City, Mo. I have been thinking about it since.
The museum itself is breath-taking. Before entering, patrons are welcomed by the 217-feet tall Liberty Memorial. It not only pays tribute to fallen WWI soldiers, but it also offers a great view of the city.
The first exhibit inside the museum is a glass bridge over a field of 9,000 silk poppies, each representing 1,000 fallen soldiers (which adds up to 9 million). I...

What does Spencer need right now? (Faith+Art+Love+Life by Amy Peterson)
|
***Jobs
Yes, I agree. One commenter on a recent article said it is very hard to live here when a decent house costs around $100,000 and the average wage is $12/hr.
***What else needs to happen in Spencer?
Do you think we're meeting our goal of becoming an arts and culture center in Iowa?
Is there enough to do here?
Do we have enough diversity?
Are there opportunities for people with disabilities to meet their potential?
Are there opportunities for entrepreneurs?
Is it...

A Passion for Fashion (Faith+Art+Love+Life by Amy Peterson)
|
***Iowa Fashion for a Great Cause
My daughter, Caitlyn, came to me a couple of weeks ago wanting to be a model in a fashion show. Frankly, I didn't think that much of the idea. My first thought was to wonder whether it would interfere with her physics and engineering camp for girls at St. Olaf College later this month.
It won't.
Then I read about it and found out it was a fundraiser for the Curiel-Reynolds School of Visual Arts.
Suddenly, the thought of a fashion show became far...

I covered this once before in another blog, but with the new law going into effect today, perhaps more people will be interested.
I downloaded a phone app that reads all of my texts and emails aloud. There is a FREE version for both Android and BlackBerry phones! You can pay a little extra to get a version with more features. Just go to http://www.drivesafe.ly! You can even set it to autoreply that you are driving and can't reply immediately. That way nobody will panic if they don't hear...

Maybe you've noticed that my blogs seem to have taken on the theme of "travel."
This blog is also about a journey, albeit more noble and impacting than any trip I have ever taken.
After reading one article by Indian human rights activist Inderjit Singh Jaijee about the plight of farmers in the northwestern India state of Punjab, former human rights lawyer Rasil Basu knew she needed to go on a quest to create a film to tell the stories that have been silenced due to the taboo status of suicide...

Sunday night (Dream Road by Casey Muessigmann)
|
The road was long and winding, but it finally led me to our destination, Nashville, Tennessee. The ride seems like a distant memory already, as the first few hours here have been spent soaking up the atmosphere of this neon city of dreams. As excitement builds, and the realization of what tomorrow will hold finally reaches my mind, I have to look back on my past that brought me here today, and the only word I can use to describe this experience is "dream."
Most people in rural Iowa grow up...

Big '10 Welcomes Nebraska (The collegiate life by Kylie Sebert)
|
Dressed in a cheerleading outfit with a tiger hawk on the front and little gold pom poms in my hands, I entered Kinnick Stadium for my first time at four years old.
I loved the atmosphere and watching games was amazing for me as I grew up. When I was 10 years old and we went to visit my brother, Cory at Iowa, I knew I would end up in the student section someday.
In all honesty, my original motive for attending Iowa was the love of football, the prestigious Big 10 Conference competitions...

A trip full of firsts (Junior moments by Gabe Licht)
|
A week ago today, my friend Tim and I concluded a long, boring drive to a fun, exciting place. No, not Vegas. Or Palm Beach. Or New Orleans.
Give up? Or maybe by process of elimination you figured out that Edmonton, Alberta was our destination. Or not?
While road-tripping is nothing new, the trip did include a lot of new things for me.
First of all, it was my inaugural trip to Canada. And let me tell you, the kind folks at Canadian Customs and Border Patrol were thrilled to welcome me....

Music Videos: Then and Now (The Randomness of Life by Heather)
|
Last night the CMT awards were on. It got me thinking of when I was a teenager and how I was so excited to turn on MTV and watch Total Request Live to see how my favorite videos were doing in their countdown. It reminded me of watching Pop Up Video on VH1 even if the videos weren't always new ones. I still to this day occasionally watch CMT for videos and will tune in to a rerun of Pop Up Video. But looking back on these memories and fast forwarding to today..what happened to MTV and VH1? ...

It's this contest. If I win, it will bring fame and minor fortune to the Spencer Daily Reporter area. Mostly to me, yes, but I would promote Spencer and Fostoria to the extent I could.
It is a major essay contest with prizes of $20,000, $10,000 and $5,000 and twenty additional winners published in a book put out by the Seven Fund, which is a really big deal think tank.

If you haven't yet been to the Curiel Reynolds School of Visual Arts, you are missing out in a big way. Just when I was looking around Spencer despairing of ever feeling we could ever be a real arts and cultural destination, even for Iowa, I attended a networking meeting for entrepreneurs and artists held at the school.

H20 = Life (Faith+Art+Love+Life by Amy Peterson)
|
For forty years we have had some idea that we face an uncertain energy future, but we have ignored a more worrisome crisis -- water. Cheap and seemingly abundant, especially in this area where we're a short drive from entire lakesful of it -- water is so common that it's hard to believe we could ever run out.
Ever since the Apollo astronauts photographed Earth from space, we've had this image of our home as a strikingly blue planet, a place of great water wealth. But of all the water on...

My crazy quest to Lazerfest
Disclaimer: If you are not interested in alternative rock music, you likely will not be interested in this blog. I also apologize for the length as it was difficult to trim down a 16-hour story.
Over the past decade or so, I have become a huge fan of alternative rock music and have seen dozens of bands perform. So, when the opportunity presented itself to see up to 16 bands at Lazerfest on Sunday in the Des Moines area, I decided to take advantage.

My Mother's Days have had their ups and downs. Five years ago for Mother's Day, I received a gift certificate to a salon and spa for the whole works -- haircut, style, mani/pedi and massage. It was great.
Most years, we don't do much, and I'm not in it for the goodies. Frankly, this year, with a few adversities and health problems, I'd really rather have everyone happy and healthy than any flowers or candy.

***Mother's day is coming up.
Good old mom. She was always there for you, always cheering you on, always in your corner with a hot meal and a warm hug. Growing up, we don't really consider what goes into the meals, the hugs, the cheerleading, the supporting, the discipline, the love.
What about mom as a person? Did she have her own dreams and aspirations? Who was she before the kids came along? Did she give it all up for the family? Were you worth it?

Political parties have outlived their usefulness. George Washington thought so in his Farewell Address in 1796:
However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.

Not many people are aware that one in 150 children is now being diagnosed with autism.
That statistic is alarming and it's hard to know what's causing it. I don't think it's vaccinations, based on the research I've seen. I'm not sure about anything environmental that's really all that new.
More awareness may be leading to more diagnoses on the high functioning end of the autism spectrum. However, it seems there are more children on the middle to lower...
