A tax cut compromise – Maybe

First of all, this is not a tax cut compromise, it is a TAX HIKE compromise. And it is loaded with PORK! The left, even the rich left, loves the inheritance tax. Maybe they represent all those lawyers who make a good living as estate planners. Of course it is also called the “Death Tax”. How can anyone argue that after a person’s income has been taxed all their life, the government should then take over half, it used to be 55%, of their assets when they die? Thus the name “Death Tax” since it is a tax on dieing.

Bush tax cuts – Then and now

If you jump into your time machine and go back to when the Bush tax cuts were being debated, the Democrats opposed the cuts because they would give huge tax breaks to the rich. To get them passed, read that as stopping a filibuster, they were limited to 10 years. Now come back today and review what is called the “cost” of extending the Bush era tax cuts.

PSA or Propaganda

Andy Griffith ads – Definitely propaganda.

Documents obtained from the Department of Health and Human Services reveal that the Obama administration spent $3,184,000 in taxpayer funds to produce and air national television ads promoting Democrats’ health care overhaul plan.

The ads, starring television icon Andy Griffith, were meant to educate “Medicare beneficiaries, caregivers and family members about forthcoming changes to Medicare as a result of the Affordable Care Act.” However, multiple media outlets, including the nonpartisan FactCheck.org, called the ads misleading.

There has always been a fine line between PSAs and propaganda. The best, most effective PSA, was Nancy Reagan’s “Just say no“. And it was never intended to be a PSA. It was a response to a question by a schoolgirl. But the school kids ran with it in Just Say No clubs.

Despotism Made Easy

There were five forms of governance that migrated from theory to reality in the 20th Century: Socialism, Communism, Fascism, Nazism and Progressivism. The common denominator among them was unprecedented control and regulation by the State over human activity. It is delusional to think that the totalitarian impulse expired with the 20th Century.

Debating the expiration of Bush tax cuts

When you get in discussions about this issue, don’t forget to point out Hauser’s Law.

Unless other things change, this seems much ado about nothing. More political posturing than substance.

Original role of the federal government – United States

In the month after the attack on Pearl Harbor
the US Army’s Eighth Air Force is established in Savannah, Georgia.

It has seven men and no planes.

Less than a year later, it is tasked with defeating
the most powerful air force in the world, the German Luftwaffe.

26,000 Eighth Air Force men will die.
More than the US Marines lost in all of World War II.

In short, after fighting the “War to end war”, defense spending was cut drasticlly. We were not prepared for WWII. General Patton didn’t have enough tanks for a decent parade and they were all old, small and vulnerable. The federal government had failed its main responsibility.

If we are going to reduce our debt, then government must get back to its principle roll as visioned by the founding fathers.

Despinning the Whitehouse white board

Keith Hennessey on CEA Chairman Austan Goolsbee’s white board. Blloomberg also – boulders = uncertainty.

Here is the take away. The US economy is HUGE. Passing a piece of legislation might cause the stock market to move but it will take months to see the results in economic statistics. It is like the world’s largest ship traveling on the ocean. You can scream “Full left, or right, rudder – full speed ahead”, and the ship does nothing. Well at least not for some time. It turns out Newtonian physics also applies to large economies. Goolsbee claims economic results for passing legislation which is absolutely absurd!

Update on Obama illegal campaign contributions

Seems Audacity had become Arrogance even before the swearing into office. But they finally returned the money – maybe. Does Hubris come to mind? Remember that saying about stones and glass houses? Incompetent seems the only excuse left.
